THE SUMMER MEDICAL & DENTAL EDUCATION PROGRAM (SMDEP)

Program Dates: June 6 - July 17, 2009

Over the past eighteen years, the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine (CWRU) has conducted a six-week summer enrollment program designed to assist highly motivated and capable minority students in preparing for a career in medicine and in dentistry. Our Summer Medical Dental Education Program (SMDEP) is designed to enrich students who are completing their freshman or sophomore year of college and are considering professional careers in medicine and dentistry. SMDEP targets those from communities that are historically underrepresented in medicine and dentistry: African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, and those who are economically disadvantaged. All are welcome to apply.

SMDEP is a FREE summer program. We provide campus housing and meals at no cost to students. We will also assist with travel expenses. Each student will receive a stipend of $700.00 upon successful completion of the program. We provide access to the gymnasium, the libraries and other facilities around campus. We will also sponsor a number of social activities off campus. In addition we provide free health insurance for the duration of the program for all students.

Curriculum

All students will take daily classes in physics, biology, general and organic chemistry, and pre-calculus and calculus. Students attend and participate in biomedical research lectures taught by our medical school faculty. Small group research projects and presentations conducted by students which are monitored by a faculty member. Students can also sign up for workshops to improve their interviewing and writing skills. While SMDEP is not designed to prepare students for the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) or Dental College Admission Test (DCAT), students will participate in a full day workshop with an expert MCAT instructor who will give insightful advice on how to take these exams.

All students will have at least three opportunities to participate in clinical experiences with dentists or physicians. We also sponsor a medical school fair, where approximately 20 medical school and dental school representatives from across the country will talk with students about their institutions. Another notable aspect of SMDEP is students' daily interaction with many minority medical students. Every participant will have an opportunity for a one-on-one meeting with a member of our Admissions Committee.

Application Deadline SMDEP: March 1, 2009
