Formal Curriculum Component
This component of the training
program will involve all trainees, and is divided into a Core Component, which is the same
for all participants, and an Individualized Component, which aims to meet the unique needs
and interests of each trainee.
Core Curriculum
The Core Curriculum Component will be
offered on a continuous basis throughout the entire training program and will involve all
trainees, regardless of their level within the program. The Core Component includes a
variety of educational forums that will enable trainees, faculty, and invited guests to
share findings and insights within a cancer training environment that is dedicated to
translational research.
Subcomponents of the Core Curriculum
include seminars and conferences (for example, the weekly Cancer Center "Blood
Club" Seminar), a journal club, a formal course in Biomedical Ethics, and a monthly
dinner meeting, which will serve as a common reference point for all trainees.
Individualized Component
Because trainees enter the program
with varying levels of scientific training, the Individualized Component of the TROTP is
designed to enable trainees to broaden their basic science knowledge in ways that are
appropriate to their particular needs. Toward this goal, trainees fulfill their
responsibilities for this component by attending seminars and conferences offered by basic
science departments of the medical school and, when appropriate, participating in formal
graduate level course work.
