Experimental Biology 1999

At EB'99 in Washington, DC this April 17th – 21st, MyoBio is sponsoring 2 "Symposia" (traditional symposia with 5 or 6 invited speakers organized by a chairman) and 2 "Featured Topics". "Featured Topics" is a new format where there is a featured speaker who defines the topic to be discussed. From the abstracts that are submitted, up to 7 are chosen by the featured speaker for oral presentation. Please mark your calendars for the following sessions:

  1. "Symposium" entitled "Effect of Cardiovascular Disease on the Structure and Function of Skeletal Muscle" will be chaired by Drs. Carlsen and Gray on Tuesday April 20 from 2:30-5:00 PM in Room 20-22 of the Convention Center
  2. "Symposium" entitled "Physiological Basis of Congestive Heart Failure" will be chaired by Dr. Houser on Wednesday April 21 from 8:30-11:00 AM
  3. "Featured Topic" entitled "Muscle Fatigue Poster Discussion" will be chaired by Drs. Nosek and Ameredes on Monday April 19 from 2:30-5:00 PM. Fifteen posters will be featured. After time to view the posters, graduate students will orally present their work in competition for a monetary award for the top 3 presenters.
  4. "Featured Topic" entitled "Mitochondrial Maturation and Biogenesis in Striated Muscle" will be chaired by Dr. Portman on Wednesday April 21 from 2:30-5:00 PM.

In addition to these sessions, we have 6 poster sessions:

  1. "Contractile and Regulatory Proteins" on Sunday with 8 presentations;
  2. "Muscle Chemistry and Metabolism" on Sunday with 6 presentations;
  3. "Smooth Muscle Physiology and Pharmacology" on Monday with 14 presentations;
  4. "Skeletal Muscle Physiology" on Monday with 30 presentations;
  5. "Cardiac Muscle Contractility" on Wednesday with 7 presentations;
  6. "Mitochondrial Maturation and Biogenesis in Striated Muscle" on Wednesday with 6 presentations.

Experimental Biology 2000

We are beginning to program the EB 2000 meeting that will be held in San Diego, CA April 15-18, 2000. I request your assistance in proposing topics and speakers for "Symposia" and "Special Topics". Each of these sessions will be 2 hours long. Please fill out the attached form (a formatted version of the form can be found at: http://mediswww.meds.cwru.edu/aps/myobio) and return it to me via snail mail (Thomas M, Nosek, Ph.D., Department of Physiology and Biophysics, Case Western Reserve University, 10900 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, OH 44106); fax (216-368-3863); or preferably e-mail (tmn2@po.cwru.edu). The MyoBio advisory committee will select the 2 "Symposia" and 2 "Featured Topic" sessions that we will program. $3,000 will be made available to the chairman of each of the 2 symposia to defray the costs of the speakers (additionally, the registration fees of all speakers will be covered by APS). $2,000 will be made available to the MyoBio Group to support the 2 "Featured Topics". I would like to receive these suggestions as soon as possible (if I have your initial suggestions before the EB meeting that would be helpful). The deadline for receipt of suggestions for consideration for EB 2000 is May 1, 1999.

Muscle Biology Steering Committee nominations:

The current members of the MyoBio Steering Committee have served in this capacity almost since the beginning of time. It is time for rejuvenation. Would you please provide me (preferable by e-mail by May 1, 1999: tmn2@po.cwru.edu) with names of members of the MyoBio Group you would like to nominate (self-nominations are acceptable) to serve on this committee. The primary responsibility of committee members is to program the "Symposia" and "Special Topics" for the EB meetings. Members of the committee are expected to attend the EB meetings. After receiving the nominations and confirming the member’s willingness to serve, the APS will conduct an election by all members of the MyoBio Group.
