THE INTERVIEW PROCESS
A personal interview and a visit to the school are essential components of our candidate selection. Applicants will be considered for an interview once their application is complete. The University Program receives approximately 5,000 applications annually and we conduct around 900 interviews. The number of outstanding candidates will exceed the number of individuals who can be accommodated in our interviewing schedule. Therefore, the granting of interviews remains at the discretion of the Admissions Committee.
The University Program interviews on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays and the College Program interviews on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays. If you are offered an interview you will be notified electronically with dates that are available to schedule your interview. The interview day has a full agenda of information sessions and interviews. The activities of the day will include a meeting with the Dean and/or Director of Admissions, Curricular and Financial Aid information sessions, lunch, the option to observe classes, and several opportunities to meet current students.
For the University Program, you will have one interview with a faculty member and one with a current medical student. The College Program requires two interviews with a faculty member and one with current medical student. Interviews usually last about 45-60 minutes and are generally conversational in tone.
After the interview...
Shortly after your interview day the Admissions Committee will meet to discuss your candidacy for acceptance to our School. We will vote for one of three outcomes; immediate acceptance, defer a final decision (Hold), or deny acceptance. You will be notified of a decision electronically within two or three weeks after the Admissions Committee meeting. If you are placed in the Hold category the Admissions Committee will revisit your application later in the admissions cycle to determine whether to place you on the alternate list or close your application for the current cycle.
The University Program utilizes a rolling admissions process and accepts applicants throughout the year until the class is full while the College Program admits on a non-rolling basis notifying applicants at two points during the cycle. The Admissions Committee very judiciously accepts applicants throughout the interview cycle to ensure equality for those interviewing later in the season.
As positions become available in the entering class, we offer acceptance to students on the alternate list on an individual basis. Since some students who eventually matriculate are accepted from the alternate list, this should not be construed as an unfavorable decision by the Admissions Committee.
We do not offer regional or phone interviews.
Second Look Weekend
The Office of Admissions sponsors a weekend in the spring to allow newly accepted applicants an opportunity to return to CWRU and learn more about the School, meet future classmates, and explore Cleveland. It is not intended to function as a second interview. In fact, you will probably enjoy the CWRU Second Look Weekend experience even more since there aren't the pressures of interviews and you won't be wearing uncomfortable suits and shoes! In the past, as many as 60 percent of the students who attended Second Look Weekend matriculated to the CWRU School of Medicine.
